The Altar
The altar dominates the interior and is its ‘centre of gravity’. It is a solid square block of whit bed Portland stone carved and shaped. The whit bed variety contains small fossils and fissures which betray the fact that a naturally occurring material is used. Water is an archetypal liturgical symbol and when it flows it imparts a sense of life and movement. The embellishment of the altar is such as to create the image of an altar with life-giving water flowing out of it, the stone struck in the desert by Moses, the altar as the fount of life, which is of course Christ himself. The altar is the liturgical centre of the life of the parish.
